On Persistence, Mindfulness, and Skateboarding

There are unsaid or underrated benefits to skateboarding and it’s time they were shared. First, you should know that most elements of skateboarding are not easy. Everyone who has tried a new trick on a skateboard knows you don’t do anything right on the first try. Most tricks look like this:

Try
Fail
Try
Fail
Try
Fail

x 1000

The persistence of skateboarders is unmatched in any sport or activity, and it’s life application is clear. The next school project that seems impossible to finish, the next work day that seems like it will never end, or the next relationship that needs to be strengthened - all of these will require persistence to prevail. The practice of persistence takes place daily in skateboarding.

If you find yourself giving up too early, try skateboarding. If you need a reminder that you’re capable or succeeding, remember when you tried, failed, and ultimately succeeded when you learned your first trick.

Keep an eye out for the follow up post on the next underrated benefit of skateboarding: Mindfulness, and get outside and skateboard. You might find it changes your life for the better.
